32. Don’t Forget the Permit

Here’s the unromantic—but important—part.

A small wedding isn’t automatically a permit-free wedding.

For commercial beach weddings on applicable State shoreline, Hawaii DLNR uses Wiki Permits for right-of-entry permits. DLNR also notes that a county park next to a beach doesn’t necessarily mean the sandy shoreline is County property.  

State Parks have separate requirements. Weddings can require Special Use Permits, and groups of 26 or more require a group-use permit. Special-use requests should be submitted at least 45 days before the requested date.  

So before you fall in love with a particular spot:

Check the rules for that exact location.

33. Don’t Forget the Marriage License

If you want your Maui elopement to be legally recognized as a Hawaii marriage, you’ll need a Hawaii marriage license.

The current Hawaii Department of Health process requires:

1. Complete the online application.

2. Save your authorization/locator information.

3. Both applicants appear together before an authorized agent.

4. Present valid government-issued photo identification.

5. Have the ceremony within 30 days of receiving the license.

There is currently no waiting period, and the license fee is $65.

What do we actually enjoy doing together?
